Drew Barrett Tipton was born in 1967 in Angleton, Texas. He earned an undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University and received his Juris Doctor from South Texas College of Law. He was a law clerk at the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas, before entering into private practice. His focus was on complex labor and employment and trade secret litigation.
He served six years as a radio operator for a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve infantry battalion and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant.
President Donald Trump nominated Tipton to serve as a judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. After the invocation of cloture, he was confirmed in a 52-41 vote by the Senate and received his commission in June 2020.
He is a member of the Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas.

The Biden Administration’s plan to freeze deportations for 100 days was temporarily blocked again by a federal judge in Texas over a lawsuit arguing that the federal government cannot make immigration enforcement changes without first consulting the state.
Texas also requested a longer lasting injunction that could block the plan during the entire period of litigation, and a hearing on that motion is set for February 19.
In his order, District Judge Drew B. Tipton wrote, “The irreparable harm that would come to Texas if an extension of the TRO is not granted before consideration of its motion for a preliminary injunction is more substantial than any harm incurred by the defendants [the federal government].”
His order did state, however, that the Biden Administration “argued that the 100-day pause on removals is necessary to allow them to take into account important immigration, foreign policy, and humanitarian considerations.”
“The Court may ultimately be persuaded by the Defendants’ arguments, but any harm they might incur between now and then does not outweigh the potential for irreparable harm to Texas,” Judge Tipton wrote.
